From a Penny to a Buck (Od grosika do złotówki) is a nationwide educational practice implemented in Poland for students in grades 2–3 of primary school (ages 8–9). Its goal is to develop foundational financial competencies, entrepreneurial attitudes, and safety skills in children through engaging, play-based activities. The program is fully integrated into the early school education curriculum and is not a separate subject. Its core objective is to establish the foundations of financial literacy and a responsible attitude toward money and risks from a very early age.
Key Activities and Student Experience
The central activity is a 10-month gamified “journey through the Galaxy of Finance and Saving” with a guide named Grosik. Students complete practical tasks related to earning, saving, planning expenses, and safety , documenting their experiences in a “Travel Diary”. Through educational games, multimedia materials, and creative missions, children develop independence in decision-making, self-confidence, responsibility , and a basic understanding of economic concepts.
Program Features and Principles
The practice combines financial education with a broad approach to safety. Based on the principle of “learning through action and play,” the program is adapted to the cognitive abilities of young school children. Its uniqueness lies in its combination of an engaging narrative with the deep and structured involvement of parents , who act as consultants and partners in their children’s education. The program emphasizes real-world relevance and the formation of rational financial habits.
Methodology and Structure
The program consists of a series of monthly thematic modules implemented over two school years. Teachers receive a complete, free, and ready-to-use didactic package , which includes detailed lesson plans, student worksheets, animated films, games, and presentations available on a dedicated online platform. The methodology is based on a project-based approach, storytelling, and the active use of interactive technologies.
Expected Outcomes and Value The practice fosters the foundations of entrepreneurial thinking, financial literacy, and self-confidence in students. Students learn to make informed decisions and understand the value of resources. For teachers, the program offers a turnkey methodological tool that increases student engagement , is easily integrated into the curriculum, and requires no additional reporting. From a Penny to a Buck stands as a model practice for the successful implementation of financial education at an early school stage.
